Anita Liberty

It all started when performance poet Anita Liberty (aka, Suzanne Weber) asked me to design postcards for an upcoming performance. After seeing Anita Liberty perform, I knew I had to capture her energy in the design—to do this, I stripped all design elements except for the type, then I made the type do all the work. I ended up doing a series of postcards that were included in both Print Magazine’s 1995 Regional Design Annual and Print’s 1995 Best of Typography. The design style of the postcards soon became the visual persona of Anita Liberty, even coming full-circle and becoming a staple of Anita’s stage performances. During my long working relationship with Anita Liberty, I also designed greeting cards, packaging for recordings of her poetry, T-shirts, two small-run artist books, which later turned into a book commercially published by Ballantine Books, and much more.

Anita Liberty Postcards

These post cards were designed as show announcements for the performance poet Anita Liberty (aka, Suzanne Weber). The series was included in both Print Magazine’s 1995 Regional Design Annual and Print’s 1995 Best of Typography.

Three of the Anita Liberty post cards were used as part of a pilot program for Five-Finger Postcards (free postcards in restaurants), becoming the highest performing cards at the time.

Anita Liberty artist books

Anita Liberty Artist Books

Anita Liberty needed artist books to sell at her performance. The books needed to be easy to assemble, so I used a stick and rubber band. The interior of both books was comprised of poems with a similar design as the postcards.

The Anita Liberty postcards became artist books, and the artist books became a commercially published book titled How to Heal the Hurt by Hating, which is still in print.
